Context

The Bible. It’s been called “the most influential text in all of Western culture.” Quoted as a spiritual and moral authority for centuries, it’s composed of writings by more than 40 authors—written over a period of about 16-hundred years.

The Bible has been such an integral part of Western civilization; it’s widely considered a literary classic.

But it’s a classic that’s no longer widely read.

Recent studies in the United States reveal substantial numbers of people today lack even the most basic working knowledge of the Bible.

That could soon change, if the publishers of this book have their way. It’s called, “The Bible Illuminated.” A soft-cover, magazine-style book with glossy pages. Here you’ll find the words of Jesus intermingled with compelling, often tragic images. Images contemporary and historic – of human strife and triumph - many recalling the tumultuous 60s and 70s. Portrait shots of the Dalai Lama, Ghandi, Princess Diana and Fidel Castro are featured.

Bible Illuminated launched in Sweden—a mostly secular nation— there, it caused Bible sales to take off; soaring by 50 percent in one year.
