Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi has been released from jail after nine years on death row for blasphemy charges. Bibi was acquitted on October 31st, but remained in prison for her own safety because of mass protests by hardline Islamists.
The mother of five is now free and reunited with her children and husband. Bibi’s lawyer, who fled to the Netherlands on Saturday for fear of his life, told AFP she was on a plane to “an undisclosed location”. Pakistan’s Foreign Office says Asia Bibi is still in the country.
Asia Bibi’s case brought a lot of attention to religious freedom in Pakistan. Wilson Chowdry from the British Pakistani Christian Association says there are more Christians imprisoned and discriminated against in Pakistan.
